Afrobarometer Data Quality Officer, Democracy in Africa Research Unit
The Afrobarometer is an independent, non-partisan research project that measures the social, political and economic atmosphere in Africa through a series of public attitude surveys. The Afrobarometer Network comprises of more than 30 member organizations who conduct field research and analyze and publicize results to media and users in the policy-making community (both government and non-government).
The Democracy in Africa Research Unit (DARU) in the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Social Science Research is a support unit within the Afrobarometer Network (see www.cssr.uct.ac.za). DARU is responsible for running a series of capacity building programs for Network members, including an annual Summer School in quantitative methods and survey research.
The University of Cape Town will make a full-time, 2 year contract appointment of a Data Quality Officer to build capacity within the Afrobarometer research network.The person will be required to assist the Network Data Manager in the implementation of periodic public attitudes surveys in 35 African countries. The surveys should adhere to Afrobarometer’s strict quality standards in respect of data production.

Grant: Disability Rights Fund (DRF) 2014
The Disability Rights Fund (DRF) seeks to strengthen the participation of Disabled Persons’ Organizations (DPOs) in the advancement of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) at country level in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, and Eastern Europe. The 2014 “Our Voices. Our Rights. Our Future” grant cycle consists of two grantmaking rounds:
1. Round One: The first grantmaking round consists of a Request for Proposals (RFP) process for DPOs in Haiti, Indonesia, Lebanon, and two new countries, Malawi and Myanmar. Applicants from India and Ukraine must be invited to apply. Information about the RFP is described in more detail below. The deadline for applications is March 27, 2014.
2. Round Two: The second grantmaking round, consists of a Letter of Interest (LoI) process for DPOs in Bangladesh and Uganda and a Request for Proposals (RFP) process for DPOs in Rwanda and the Pacific Island Countries (Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu). Applicants from Peru must be invited to apply. The LOI and RFP will be announced in Summer 2014.

PAID Internship Opportunity: Policy Advocacy Intern – West Africa Civil Society Institute
The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) based in Accra, Ghana established by the Open Society Initiative for West Africa to enhance the capacity of civil society organisations in the sub region in the areas of institutional building, organisational governance, training, and policy dialogue introduced a six months internship programme in 2008. The internship programme is aimed at developing the next generation of African scholars and practitioners.
The internship programme primarily targets young West Africans at the start of their professional careers seeking work experience in WACSI’s Policy Advocacy core area and capacity building in other areas such as: leadership skills, proposal and report writing, training and facilitation skills. Interns will also be exposed to research on policy advocacy issues in West Africa, civil society, governance and human rights, peace and security, Africa’s current development initiatives (NEPAD, APRM), sub‐regional trends (ECOWAS), and Gender issues.
The Policy Advocacy intern will work closely and report to the Policy Advocacy officer. The intern will help with assigned policy and advocacy research projects.
