Africa Great Lakes Peaceworker

Quaker Peace & Social Witness has two exciting new openings for Peaceworkers placed in Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo from September 2014 for one year.

Bujumbura, Burundi – The Peaceworker will be based with Action for Peace and Development, assigned to work with INAMA (Initiative for Peaceful Elections), 29 civil society organisations which have formed an Early Warning Early Response network in the lead up to the 2015 elections. You will contribute towards preparing citizen reporters, defining peace and violence indicators, and developing strategies of response.

Uvira, Democratic Republic of Congo – The Peaceworker will be based with INIREC – Initiatives pour la Reconciliation Communautaire. You will spend the year building the capacity of this small grassroots organisation, and helping develop dynamic, experiential approaches to their democracy and human rights civic education initiative.

These posts are open to anyone committed to the values of the Religious Society of Friends. You must be French-speaking, adaptable, creative, culturally sensitive, and able to work as part of a small team and on your own initiative. Transferable skills in oral and written communication are essential, as is a desire to develop your experience in the field of peace and conflict transformation. A modest maintenance and housing allowance will be provided.

Soliya Outreach Officer – Cairo

Soliya is currently seeking a strategic, creative thinker with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, who is seeking the opportunity to take initiative, drive outreach efforts, and develop bilingual marketing collateral for an innovative, global not for profit organization. The Outreach Officer will lead Soliya’s outreach efforts in the MENA region as well as broader Muslim World: expanding our network of participating universities; strengthening relationships with our current university partners; and developing strategic relationships with partner organizations to enable outreach to new market segments. The position will be based in Cairo and will entail some travel across the Middle East, North Africa and South / South East Asia.

We are seeking candidates who excel in partnership development with a talent for communicating across varied audiences and a drive for closing deals. Candidates should have: 5+ years of relevant professional experience in areas including marketing, partnership creation and business development required; excellent networking and cultivation capacity; a talented communicator with the ability to develop collateral in English and Arabic targeted at various audiences; strong ties to the Higher Education sector in predominantly Muslim countries preferred; knowledge of technology enabled international education trends in the region are pluses;Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English required.

International Alert – Programme Director, DRC

Alert is recruiting for a Programme Director for the Africa Programme (AP) to cover maternity leave for the Deputy Country Manager. The post will be based in Bukavu, DRC with frequent travel within the DRC and occasionally within the region and to London.

Working closely with Alert’s AP, including the Great Lakes Manager, and with other Alert departments, you will take on active role in broader regional strategy and cross-programmatic activities.You will be responsible for ensuring that Alert’s contribution to peacebuilding in the DRC is maximised, by taking responsibility for sound project management of a portfolio of projects (through line management of Project Managers) and supporting relationship building and maintaining visibility for the programme, contributing to raising funds and recruiting new staff when necessary.

Educated to higher degree or equivalent experience in a relevant subject you will have substantial NGO project management experience in various conflict-affected environments, including responsibility for strategy design, staffing, admin/finance issues, contract management and donor relations.  You will be able to demonstrate success in leading peacebuilding-related programmes, and familiarity with conflict-sensitive approaches to development. Excellent working knowledge (spoken, written and read) of both French and English is also essential.

Saferworld: Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Advisor, South Sudan

The Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Adviser will be responsible for monitoring and evaluating established and new projects, providing accountability, and ensuring efficiency and sustainable success from start to end.  The post-holder will also be responsible for establishing or modifying Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), overseeing quarterly reviews and outcome harvesting processes, as well as coordinating activity and outcome monitoring reports for all South Sudan projects, consistent with donor guidelines and strategic objectives.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the design, development and delivery of participatory M&E approaches within the INGO/NGO or similar sectors and the capacity to produce high quality briefs and reports in English.  Substantial experience as a trainer/facilitator on M&E systems development and management would be a distinct advantage.

Saferworld: Programme Manager, South Sudan

The Programme Manager will lead the implementation of Saferworld’s programmes in Juba and seven states.  Through policy and advocacy efforts s/he will ensure that programme activities at the local level are linked with state and national priorities, thereby contributing to sustainable impact within and between communities and government institutions in the Republic of South Sudan.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 – 5 years progressive management experience in the security and justice sector as well as significant experience of managing multiple grants in a complex and logistically challenging conflict or post-conflict environment.  S/he will have strong communication and staff management skills and a proven ability to plan strategically and manage organisational systems and procedures.

Saferworld: Area Project Manager, South Sudan

The Area Project Manager will be responsible for the successful programme expansion and delivery of Saferworld’s work on community policing and community security in South Sudan, focussing on specific states, and cutting across different funding streams.

The successful candidate will have 5 years’ project management experience in South Sudan or a similar conflict-affected and logistically challenging environment.  S/he will have experience of managing multiple grants and project components as well as strong staff management, team building and mentoring skills.  Expertise in community security/safety, community protection and community policing would be an advantage.

ActionAid: Campaigns & Advocacy Coordinator, South Africa and Kenya

Works closely with the Campaign Project Teams, Campaign Managers, Advocacy Managers and Communication Leads in order to define proactive and effective strategies and tactics in support of our campaigning and advocacy goals.

Key responsibility areas include, but are not limited to: works closely with the campaigns project team and the campaign managers to develop communications strategies which help support building the campaigns signature of AAI and specifically supports the development of a campaigning ‘identity’ that embodies AAI’s values, mission and international strategy; ensure these strategies and messages contribute to the political and policy change objectives of campaign, and are innovative and effective; monitor output and outcomes of events, and create reports for management;devise, produce and/or project manage campaigning communication products and plans to outreach to potential new supporters and the wider public to contribute to campaign objectives; co-ordinate with campaigners to develop and deliver both global campaign events and stunts.

2014 South-South Scholarships Award for researchers in Africa: Work and Welfare in the South

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs) announce the launch of the South-South Scholarships Award 2014 for research on the theme “Work and Welfare in the South” aimed at social scientists from Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Asia. The goal of this awards is to encourage original research on the subject and to promote the final work through presentation at an international seminar.

Research proposals should be based on at least one of the sub-themes mentioned within the general theme. Applicants are expected to formulate projects from a comparative perspective. These projects should not be restricted to one country or region, but they should involve the development of a comparative framework for conceptual and empirical research. Although this is not mandatory, research proposals that adjust to these criteria will receive special consideration during the selection process.

West African Peacebuilding Institute

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is one of the leading peacebuilding organizations in Africa. The mandate of WANEP is to build the capacity of peacebuilding, development and human rights practitioners in Africa and worldwide on peace and security issues to promote and protect human security through context specific tools and indigenous techniques.  To fulfil this mandate, WANEP in partnership with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), holds each year a four-week course on peacebuilding in Accra, Ghana.
