New Fellowships, Scholarships, and Jobs for Nov. 2, 2012

Fellowships: Higher Education Leadership Programme (HELP), Postdoctoral Fellowships, CODESRIA

Within the framework of its strategy to contribute towards stronger leadership and more effective management in African universities, and making the institutions more committed to excellence in research and teaching, the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA) has launched a research programme on Higher Education Leadership in Africa.

The programme is conducting studies that will lead to a better and deeper understanding of the issues surrounding higher education leadership in Africa. The aim is to identify patterns, models that work, and styles of leadership, as well as best practices and policy options. In the first phase of the Higher Education Leadership Programme (HELP), CODESRIA is facilitating the creation of national working groups and comparative research networks in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa.

As part of this programme, CODESRIA is hereby inviting applications from African academics and researchers, particularly those based in these countries, for post-doctoral fellowships which will be awarded for one academic semester on a competitive basis. Fellows funded under this programme will be expected to spend at least four months either at the CODESRIA headquarters in Dakar or in an African higher education institution outside their countries of residence. CODESRIA will provide successful applicants with a modest stipend to cover fieldwork, travel and subsistence within the duration of the fellowship. Further information on HELP can be found at www.codesria.org.

Eligibility

Interested academics and researchers based in universities located in any of the countries listed above are requested to send in their research proposals, focusing on specific issues within the broad area of higher education leadership and management in Africa. Proposals from senior academics occupying positions of leadership in African universities (e.g. as deans, heads of department, provosts, holders of research chairs, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, academic staff association leaders, student leaders, etc. past or present), who would like to reflect on, and write about their experiences in higher education leadership and management, are highly encouraged.

The budget should reflect the travel and living costs the applicants expect to incur in the four months that they will be spending in the institutions outside their countries of residence.

Fellowship: Maternal Health Young Champions Program, Open to Individuals from Ethiopia and Nigeria

Maternal mortality is a major threat to women’s lives in developing countries. While maternal health outcomes have improved in some countries over the past few decades, rates of maternal death remain alarmingly high. Every minute, a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth and over 300 million women in poor countries suffer from maternal morbidity. In many very poor countries the majority of mothers do not receive even the most basic health care, and quality care during childbirth – when both the mother and child are most at risk – is often unavailable.

Program Overview

To reduce maternal mortality and morbidity over the long-term, emerging public health leaders need to be equipped with the skills, commitment, and vision to respond fully to multiple causes and consequences of this threat. Maternal Health Young Champions are students or young graduates in public health or a related field who are committed to improving maternal mortality and morbidity through either research or innovative field work in their home country.

Maternal Health Young Champions Program, a partnership between the Institute of International Education and Harvard School of Public Health, offers a unique fellowship to 10 young people who are passionate about improving maternal health in their home country. The Young Champions who are selected will be matched with in-country mentors from selected organizations for a nine-month research or field project internship focusing on a particular area of maternal health. The fellowship includes leadership training and participation in the Global Maternal Health Conference 2013 in Arusha, Tanzania. Eligibility Requirements Applications are currently being accepted from candidates from Ethiopia, India, and Nigeria who meet the following minimum criteria:

• Bachelor’s or equivalent degree

• 20-35 years of age

• Clearly articulated plans for continued technical experience, research, or study

• Demonstrated career commitment to improvement of maternal health, especially in developing countries

• Interest in academic research or technical service provision in the field (excluding policy advocacy)

• Articulated work/study project goals
