As The CIHA Blog has posted about before, the 2011 intervention in Libya, justified through the language of humanitarianism, ultimately destabilized the region, as seen with the rise of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in North Africa, Mali, and increasingly in other Sahel countries.
Now, Abdelkader Abderrhmane writes, “Western powers are urging the formation of [a national unity] government and quietly preparing to step in … [which] would have dramatic consequences for Africa,” both in terms of security and in African Union efforts to promote cooperation on the continent and internationally.
