Mo Ibrahim Foundation African Scholarships for Masters Study UK 2017/2018 The Centre of African Studies offers 3 MSc/MA scholarships to African nationals as part of the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative funded by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. In order to be considered for funding, applicants must first secure an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER for the MSc/MA by applying directly to the SOAS admissions office. The eligible MSc/MA are only those within the following departments(note that any MSc in each department is applicable):

Call for Nomination of PhD Candidates in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Higher Education Studies for Mentorship As part of the activities of the Diaspora program, CODESRIA has constituted a ‘College of Academic Mentors’. The college is composed of senior academics from the Diaspora and within Africa in higher education, the humanities and social sciences. This component will entail linking selected PhD candidates and their supervisors to mentors for purposes of benefiting the candidate in his/her PhD progress. The mentors will be expected to offer advice regarding relevant literature, read and comment draft chapters of theses in preparation, liaise with the official advisors of the doctoral candidates based at African universities and share their views about the work of the students; and where possible, invite and host the student and the official advisor as visiting scholars. The mentors may also be requested to run various activities under this program such as institutes, research methodology workshops and research networks. A joint workshop of the selected students, their supervisors and mentors will be held at the beginning to agree on working modalities. The College of Mentors will both complement and strengthen the support in capacity building in African universities that CODESRIA is engaged in through the Small Grants Programme for Thesis Writing, the institutes and the methodology workshops. Target for this call and mode of Application This call is addressed to Deans of humanities, social sciences and higher education or doctoral schools in African universities and supervisors of doctoral students interested in having their PhD students benefit from the mentorship program. The application package for each nominated student should contain the following:

• A letter of endorsement from the faculty/department identifying the PhD students nominated (specifying the discipline, gender, and the stage at which they are in their research) as well as the university supervisors allocated to the student.
• Status of the students nominated (are they members of staff or full time students on staff development).
• A statement of motivation from the nominated candidate;
• A summarized copy of the candidate’s PhD proposal (maximum 15 pages) in word.

African Women’s Public Service Fellowship The Fellowship provides full tuition, fees, housing or a housing stipend (if enrolling in the Global EMPA program), travel to and from the United States, and a small stipend to cover books and miscellaneous expenses. Fellowship recipients commit to return to their respective home countries at the conclusion of the program with the goal of assuming a leadership position on the continent where they can meaningfully contribute to the challenges currently confronting Africa. MCDI Country Director, Equatorial Guinea MCDI requires a Country Director to manage and represent its portfolio of health projects in Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa. Ongoing projects include the Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP III), the Equatorial Guinea Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EGMVI) and the Equatorial Guinea Cervical Cancer Screening and Treatment Project. Qualifications, Skills and Experience required:

  • PhD, MD (preferred), MSN, MPH, or equivalent graduate degree related to health sciences and/or international health.
  • Ten or more years’ experience in on-site management of large-scale ($20-$40 million) health-focused development assistance programs in a challenging developing country setting, preferably in Africa, preferably with major US PVOs and/or funded by major US donors. Such experience must include:
  • leadership, motivation and organization of a team of international technical experts and managers;
  • supervision of a field office and ensuring compliance with established administrative and financial procedures;
  • demonstrated success in negotiation of agreements with national authorities;
  • overseeing the systematic development of the capacities of a team of national professional staff, and transferring program responsibilities to them;
  • performance-based program monitoring and evaluation;
  • preparation of detailed program implementation plans and success in attaining the goals and objectives established in these;
  • development of productive, cordial working relations with Ministry of Health and other local counterparts; and
  • development of productive, cordial working relations with donor agency representatives, and demonstrated knowledge of/experience with US donor regulations.
  • Significant experience in managing and/or providing technical assistance to malaria control programs is highly
  • Experience with implementation of projects funded by corporate donors is desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish. Fluency in French and/or Portuguese may be considered as partially meeting the requirement for Spanish fluency.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team player, able to work under stress.
  • Sensitivity to the concerns of the developing world and able to work with local and national authorities and community-based providers from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Highly computer literate, familiar with Windows® and MS Office programs for word-processing, spreadsheets, database management, presentations, and electronic communication.

World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program The Africa Region of the World Bank Group (WBG) is relaunching its fellowship program for Ph.D. students who are Sub-Saharan nationals. The program will increase the diverse workforce that is a priority for the Bank and its clients. About the Fellowship Fellows will spend a minimum of six months at the World Bank offices in Washington, D.C. or in a Sub-Saharan country, getting hands-on experience in development work. This includes knowledge generation and dissemination, design of global and country policies and the building of institutions to achieve inclusive growth in developing countries. While benefitting from research and innovation in multiple sectors, fellows will also work on economic policy, technical assistance, and lending for eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity. Special attention will be given to work with Fragile and Conflict-Affected States. Fellows will be expected to complete a research project and prepare a research paper to present to staff. High-standard papers may be published internally. Specifically, selected participants will:

Who Should Apply Sub-Saharan nationals who are recent Ph.D. graduates, or current doctoral students within one or two years of completing or graduating from a Ph.D. program in the following fields: Economics, Demography, Applied Statistics and Econometrics, Impact Evaluation, Education, Health, Energy, Agriculture, and Infrastructure. Candidates must:

  • Be a recent graduate or be enrolled in an academic institution and returning to university after the fellowship
