Manager Training Unit, ACCORD, Durban, South Africa

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South Africa-based civil society organisation working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD’s primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict.

The strategic objective of the Training Unit is to position ACCORD as a positive and constructive organisation to enhance the capacity of organisations and individuals in the areas of conflict management. The Unit works closely with other Units/Departments at ACCORD in order to collate information and generate this into desired training programmes to be implemented within ACCORD’s practical field experiences in mediating and intervening indifferent conflict situations on the continent.

Qualifications: PhD or equivalent in peace and conflict studies or related field (candidates with a masters degree and a proven requisite experience will be considered); Eight to twelve years of progressively responsible experience in the field of conflict management, peace and security, or international relations; Over and above English, fluency in French will be an added advantage; Experience and understanding of curriculum development; Attention to detail, ability to plan and prioritise work and meet deadlines to successfully deliver to a diversity of objectives and demands.

IREX Community Solutions Grant

The Community Solutions Program is a professional development program for the best and brightest global community leaders working in Transparency & Accountability, Tolerance & Conflict Resolution, Environmental Issues, and Women & Gender Issues. Selected candidates will participate in: a four month U.S. fellowship with a local nonprofit organization or government agency; structured virtual learning and networking via the Online Community Leadership Institute; and, the design and implementation of follow-on projects in their home countries.

Financial provisions of the grant: J-1 visa support; Round-trip travel from participant’s home city to the U.S.; Accident and sickness insurance; Living Allowance to cover housing, meals and incidentals.

International Alert Consultant, Uganda

We’re looking for someone with strong evaluation experience and expertise in business and private sector approaches in peacebuilding, to carry out a final evaluation of an Alert project in Uganda. You will work with International Alert’s project team to design and implement the evaluation, and prepare the final report, over a total duration of approximately 20-25 days including fieldwork in Uganda. Skills and experience required: A minimum of 5 years practical experience in Development work; A relevant Masters’ degree or equivalent; Strong experience in qualitative evaluation of peacebuilding or development programmes; Experience in programme development; Experience in quantitative monitoring data collection and analysis, and sampling techniques; Knowledge of issues related to peacebuilding, political economy, private sector development, community development and advocacy in Uganda; Knowledge of the socio-cultural, economic, political and NGO context in Uganda; Fluent in English; Knowledge of Ugandan language(s) is a bonus.

Associate Director, Sudans and Horn of Africa, Enough Project

The Associate Director position requires deep policy knowledge of the region as well as experience in team leadership. The Associate Director will carry out and lead research and impact strategy on the conflict dynamics in the region and related U.S. government and international policy for Enough’s policy papers, briefings, and advocacy efforts. The Associate Director will be responsible for leading the Enough Project’s policy and advocacy work on political, economic, and conflict dynamics in Sudan, South Sudan, and the Horn of Africa in collaboration with the Founding Director and under the direction of the Director of Research and Publications/Editorial. This is a position requiring research and report-writing experience, a strong understanding of conflicts in the Horn of Africa, and an ability to lead and manage a team of policy researchers and writers. The Associate Director will also be expected to represent Enough in the media and with U.S. and international policymakers.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Master’s degree strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree and at least five to seven years of post-college working experience conducting research in international relations, political science, or a related field required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the subject and ability to provide in-depth analysis and write professionally on the issue area.
  • Previous field experience in Sudan and South Sudan.
  • Strong understanding of the policymaking community and the potential implications of various advocacy and policy approaches.
  • Academic background or work experience in the prevention of atrocities, human rights, conflict prevention and resolution, and the responsibility to protect.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Adept team player with good interpersonal skills.
  • A strong commitment to human rights and conflict resolution and to Enough’s mission to end genocide and mass atrocities.
  • Superb organization and time-management skills, including the ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong staff management skills.

Senior Policy Analyst, DRC and Great Lakes Region, Enough Project

The Senior Policy Analyst focusing on the Democratic Republic of Congo, or DRC, and the Great Lakes Region will be responsible for researching and writing about the drivers of conflict and policy options in eastern DRC—as well as related U.S. government, corporate, and international policy—for the Enough Project’s policy papers, briefings, and advocacy efforts. This position requires three main areas of expertise: deep field-based knowledge about the economic, security, and political dynamics in Congo and the Great Lakes region; policy acumen, particularly regarding U.S. policy in Africa; and a demonstrated ability to write concise policy reports and briefing papers.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • At least seven years of experience working on Congo and the Great Lakes region, including demonstrated knowledge of political, economic, and security dynamics in Congo and the Great Lakes region and an ability to provide concise, in-depth analysis and write professionally on the issue area.
  • Proven ability to conduct policy research and a strong understanding of policymaking issues and the policy community, as well as of the implications of various advocacy and policy approaches, particularly U.S. government policy.
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred. Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of postcollege work experience.
  • Previous field experience in Central Africa a major plus.
  • Strong academic background or work experience in human rights, the prevention of atrocities, conflict prevention and resolution, and the responsibility to protect.

“Women, Water and the World: How Women Can Solve the Earth’s Water Crisis”, Mills College, CA

The Women in Public Service Project Institute at Mills College is hosting a 10-day institute geared for emerging women leaders who are either currently in the public sector, or aspire to be. The focus of this year’s institute is “Women, Water, and the World: How Women Can Solve the Earth’s Water Crisis.

The 2015 Institute will be held on the 135 acre campus of Mills College, located in Oakland, California, in the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. Mills is a nationally renowned independent liberal arts college for women with graduate programs for women and men. Since 1852, we’ve been empowering students to become creative, independent thinkers who take and inspire action. The College educates students to think critically and communicate responsibly and effectively, to accept the challenges of their creative visions, and to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to effect thoughtful changes in a global, multicultural society. As part of the Institute, field trips are being planned to visit elected leaders and community-based organizations in San Francisco in partnership with the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women. An additional field trip will be made to Stanford University’s School of Law, whose Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law is partnering with Mills on this Institute.
