Reflections on the 2022 General Elections in Kenya: What is at Stake?

We are pleased to share a video of CIHA co-editor, Elias Opongo, S.J. In addition to being one of our editors, Elias is the director of the Centre for Research, Training and Publications (CRTP) at the Hekima University College, and member of the Kroc Institute Advisory Board. Along with Tim Murithi, Elias is editor and author Elections, Violence and Transitional Justice in Africa, published in 2022 by Routledge. He also has recent publications in the Journal of Social Encounters, International Bulletin of Mission Research, and Asian Horizon Journal.

‘Reflections on the 2022 General Elections in Kenya: What is at Stake?’ was co-sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, The Notre Dame East Africa Alumni Club, and Notre Dame International, which is linked to Notre Dame University.

Dr. Elias’s talk covered the first theme of ‘Trust for and conduct of the institutions of Governance’ and included a discussion of the Independent and Electoral Commission (IEBC), the Police, and the Supreme Court. Panelists also include Njuhi Chege, communications strategist and human centered design researcher for Sonder Collective; Muthee Kiunga, a human rights advocate and resettlement office for the UNHCR; Levit Nudi, a cyber security researcher; Julie Kemunto Matoke, LLM, a lecturer of law at the Kabarak University Law School and a litigation advocate at Justice Defenders in Kenya. The event was moderated by Jackline Aridi who is the director of Nairobi Initiatives for Notre Dame International.
