Remembering Biafra: A Blog Series Commemorating the 50 Year Anniversary of the Biafra/Nigerian War

Recalling the CIHA Blog conference held in October 2015 on the Biafra/Nigerian war, a recent conference entitled “Remembering Biafra” held at George Washington University, and a recently concluded “Legacies of Biafra” conference at SOAS University of London, over the next few weeks, we will be running a blog series commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Biafra/Nigerian War.

As the 50th anniversary of the Biafra/Nigerian war (1967-1970) approaches on July 6th, we will be posting reflections and commemorations from our conference as well as several others. We would like to also invite any contributions from our readers including scholars, community activists, and human rights practitioners.

We would finally like to call attention to additional opportunities that keep the discussion on Biafra and the Biafra/Nigerian War open. There is an upcoming conference (September 1 – 2, 2017) on “50 Years After: History, Memory and Legacy of the Nigeria-Biafra War” to be held in Chicago jointly sponsored by the Department of Black World Studies, Dominican University, Transatlantic Research Group, Igbo League, Inc., and Biafra War Oral History and Documentation Project. Find more information here. The Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja is hosting an upcoming conference on May 25 entitled “Memory & Nation Building: Biafra 50 years after.” For more information, visit their website.
