Third Annual Black History Month Film Festival at IAS, UG

Black History Month, an annual remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora, is celebrated in some countries annually. In Ghana, even though it is not a very big event, annual events are organized in February to remember Africans in the diaspora and their important place in world history and current affairs. The Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, as part of this remembrance series, has for the past three years organized week-long film festivals for the university community and the general public with the goal of ensuring that the African diaspora continues to be remembered as a key part of the past, present and future of Ghana and the African continent.

This year, the film festival begins with a lecture by the new deputy chairperson of the African Union, Thomas Kwesi Quartey, on 2 March 2017, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., on the theme “From the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade to the AU: Tracing the Interconnecting Cord of Pan-Africanism.” This lecture is expected to provide education and background to the early roots of African unity and lay a foundation for the films that will be shown throughout the week.
