Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies Global South Travel Grant
The Peace Studies Section of ISA and the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies invite nominations for the first annual Peace Studies Section – Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies Global South Travel Grant. This competitive grant will be awarded to a Peace Studies Section member who is currently working at an institution located in the Global South and who has had a paper accepted for the 2020 ISA Convention in Honolulu and requires further funds to attend.
General Information
The grant recipient will receive a $1000 cash reimbursement for travel, accommodation and/or registration fees directly accrued from their attendance at the convention. Anyone who meets the above selection criteria is eligible to apply, but we particularly encourage submissions from early career and female candidates. The Selection Committee reserves the right to decide not to award a grant if it is decided that no submitted applications are eligible for or deserving of the funds.
To apply, please submit (1) motivation letter (max. 300 words), (2) abstract of the accepted paper, (3) budget, including expected costs and available funds, and (4) evidence of ISA 2020 acceptance. The motivation letter should discuss how attendance at ISA benefits the applicant’s research and career objectives. Examples include plans to network, attend other panels and events, receive feedback on own presentation, etc. Submissions with an explanation of more than 300 words or missing any of these four documents will not be considered.
All application materials should be e-mailed preferably in one pdf file directly to the chair of the Grant Committee, Lina Tuschling (ltuschl1@kennesaw.edu), before midnight on October 6th, 2019. The committee will make its decision as soon as possible and the awardee will be informed of their award on or before October 21st, prior to the Convention registration deadline.
Please be advised that there is no need to submit applications for both the award co-sponsored by Lynne Rienner Publishers and that co-sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. Any application to either of the two Peace Studies Section co-sponsored global south travel grants will be considered for both awards.
- For the purposes of this grant we are defining the “Global South” as it is defined in the ISA Global South Caucus Charter, Art. 4, section 5ai, which includes the following regions as part of the Global South: Latin America and the Caribbean, South and Southeast Asia and the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East/North Africa and developing Eurasia.
- The reimbursement will be paid directly to the awardee at the 2020 ISA Convention in Honolulu and only after provision of all pertinent receipts for travel, accommodation and registration.
- The grant committee is comprised of the chair and two additional members of the ISA Peace Studies Section Executive Committee.
Roundtable on Religion, Economy, and Class in Global Context
Kirsten Wesselhoeft and Deonnie Moodie are seeking 8,000-10,000-word contributions to a roundtable on religion, economy, and class in global context to submit to a leading US journal in Religious Studies. In particular, they seek contributions examining the ways that religion and economy co-produce one another in non-Western and non-Christian contexts in the current moment of late capitalism.
300-word abstracts are due on October 15, 2019 and full articles are due April 1, 2020. They expect the roundtable to be published by early 2021.

Women, Peace and Security in Africa: Celebrating 20 Years of UNSC Resolution 1325
Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR), Hekima University College, Nairobi, Kenya, invites paper presentations for the above conference that will take place 21-23 October 2020.
The deadline for submission of the 200-word abstracts is 1 November 2019. The authors of selected abstracts will be invited to produce chapter which will be published and launched at the conference.
All book chapters ought to be submitted by 1 February 2020. More than 1000 women will also be reached on an online survey on women, peace, and security in Africa, the results of which will be presented at the conference.

Duke University Trinity College of Arts and Sciences is launching a search for two tenure-track professors whose research focuses on issues of critical importance to contemporary Africa. These hires are part of an effort to increase the number of faculty with global perspectives and expertise across core departments, with support from the Office of the Provost and funded by The Duke Endowment.
Candidates should be at the assistant or associate professor level; the search is open to discipline and to field. Successful candidates should be working on issues that confront the continent today—including but not constrained to economic development and institutions, urbanism, migration, political development and institutions, environmentalism, decoloniality, cultural production, and new knowledge formations. Candidates will be considered in the context of the hiring department, with an interest to increase the representation of these studies across arts and sciences.
Candidates submitting materials by November 1, 2019 will receive full consideration. Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, work sample, and names of three references. Review of candidates will continue until positions are filled.

APCG Online Colloquium
The African Politics Conference Group (APCG) is currently planning its October and November colloquia. The APCG Online Colloquium is designed to increase opportunities for scholars of African politics to present and receive timely, constructive feedback on unpublished work. Colloquium sessions will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of one working paper that the author seeks to publish in a peer-reviewed journal. Discussants with relevant expertise will be recruited by the colloquium conveners for the participant. Sessions will be open to others who have read the paper and wish to participate in the online discussion. Sessions will last 60 minutes and take place via the Bluejeans videoconferencing platform, which will be hosted by an APCG member.

Africa Research Development Group: Call for Leadership Proposals
The African Politics Conference Group (APCG) and the American Political Science Association (APSA) are pleased to announce a call for proposals from political scientists interested in serving as co-leaders for the 2020 Research Development Group (RDG) for early career scholars from African Institutions. The Africa RDG is an opportunity for African scholars to advance current research towards publication, participate in the APSA annual meeting, and develop scholarly networks with colleagues. The Hewlett Foundation has generously provided funds to cover the costs for the six early career scholars working in Africa to attend the workshop and conference. See the call here.

Call for Papers – International Conference – Central Africa’s Renaissance (1960-2020)
Organized by the Central African Studies Association (CASA)
and the University of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
Location: Kinshasa, July 6-8, 2020
With the goal of starting a close collaboration between Central African, European and American researchers and enhancing the presence and visibility of academic research in Central Africa, a diverse group of researchers (composed of anthropologists, historians, political scientists, sociologists, specialists in literature and arts, etc.) proposes an international conference from July 6-8, 2020, at the University of Kinshasa (DRC), on the revival of Central Africa covering the post-colonial period (1960-2020). The conference sets out to examine forms of political, social, and cultural renewal in countries of the subregion. Are Central African societies developing new cultures and visions that break from those of 1960 through 2000? Are the cultures and modes of thinking that emerged after Central African independence progressively being replaced by 21st century innovations? Are central African countries celebrating the potential of man and woman? Is a renaissance of literature, arts, science taking place in central Africa?
Research Themes
Proposals stemming from diverse, interdisciplinary fields in the social sciences and the humanities will state, in a maximum of 300 words, the issue/theme to be examined, methodology, and primary bibliographical sources. Abstracts may include theoretical, empirical, and methodological aspects. They should contribute to the following workshops:
